History
The circuit officially opened in 1972 as the Autódromo do Estoril, quickly becoming Portugal’s principal international racing venue.
Its defining international chapter began in 1984 when it hosted the inaugural Portuguese Grand Prix at Estoril. Over the following thirteen seasons the circuit witnessed numerous historic moments, including Ayrton Senna’s first Formula One victory in 1985, achieved in torrential rain, and several memorable championship battles involving Alain Prost, Nigel Mansell and Michael Schumacher.
Following Formula One’s departure after 1996, Estoril remained active through MotoGP, FIA GT, endurance racing, touring cars and extensive manufacturer testing.
In 2020, amid the revised international motorsport calendar, the circuit briefly welcomed the Portuguese motorcycle Grand Prix before that event later moved to Portimão.
The venue was officially renamed Autódromo Fernanda Pires da Silva in recognition of one of the key figures behind Portuguese motorsport.
Circuit Design
Circuito do Estoril was developed as a permanent racing circuit within the rolling landscape near Portugal’s Atlantic coast. Its layout combines a long main straight with a varied collection of corner types, producing a circuit where high-speed performance is repeatedly interrupted by technical braking and acceleration phases rather than forming one continuous high-speed sequence.
The circuit’s geometry places particularly different demands on machinery across the lap. Heavy braking zones test stability, slower corners emphasise mechanical grip and traction, while faster sections require confidence and accurate positioning. The long final Parabólica creates sustained lateral loading before opening progressively onto the main straight, making its exit particularly important. Changes in gradient are less dramatic than at circuits such as Spa or Portimão, but remain sufficient to influence visibility, braking and vehicle balance.
Estoril’s design therefore rewards a broad performance envelope rather than a single dominant strength. Its combination of long acceleration, technical cornering and a demanding final sweep has made the circuit suitable for both automobile and motorcycle competition, while preserving the straightforward natural character associated with an earlier generation of European permanent circuits.

The opening sector builds speed quickly before heavy braking into Turn 1, followed by a sequence where accurate positioning and strong traction are essential. Through the middle of the lap, the circuit becomes more technical, combining changes of direction with slower corners that reward patience and mechanical grip. The final section is dominated by Parabólica Ayrton Senna, the long right-hander leading onto the main straight, where maintaining momentum and progressively applying power are critical to lap time.
Although its long main straight and final corner provide Estoril with its most recognisable characteristics, the circuit’s defining challenge comes from balancing braking stability and low-speed traction with the momentum required through its faster sections. Circuito do Estoril occupies an important position in Portuguese motorsport and has provided the country with one of its principal connections to international automobile and motorcycle racing. Opened in 1972, the circuit developed from a national venue into an internationally recognised stage, bringing major world championships to Portugal and helping establish the Estoril region within European motorsport.
Its strongest automobile association is with Formula One, which held the Portuguese Grand Prix at Estoril from 1984 to 1996.
