Autódromo José Carlos Pace
The Autodromo José Carlos Pace, better known as the Autodromo de Interlagos or simply Interlagos, is a 4.309 km (2.677 mi) motorsport circuit located in the city of São Paulo, Brazil.
Inaugurated on 12 May 1940 and renamed in 1985 in honour of Formula One driver José Carlos Pace, Interlagos has been the home of the Brazilian Formula One Grand Prix since 1972.
The circuit’s traditional name, Interlagos (Portuguese for “between the lakes”), comes from its location in the neighbourhood of the same name, a region between two large artificial lakes, Guarapiranga and Billings, built at the beginning of the 20th century to supply the São Paulo metropolitan area with water and electricity. The name “Interlagos” was suggested by the French architect and town planner Alfred Agache, after the region of Interlaken in Switzerland. Interlagos was renamed “Autódromo José Carlos Pace” in 1985 in honour of Brazilian Formula One driver José Carlos Pace, who died in a plane crash in 1977.
