History
Motorsport at Magny-Cours began in 1960 when a permanent circuit was constructed adjacent to the Winfield Racing School, one of Europe’s most influential driver development academies. Over subsequent decades the venue expanded significantly, attracting national championships before undergoing extensive modernisation in preparation for Formula One.
In 1991 the circuit hosted its first French Grand Prix, becoming France’s principal Formula One venue for the next eighteen seasons. The period saw memorable victories by Michael Schumacher, Alain Prost, Fernando Alonso and many other champions.
Although Formula One departed after 2008, Magny-Cours retained its international importance through World Superbike, GT racing, Formula Renault, endurance events and extensive manufacturer testing.
Its association with the Winfield School also helped launch the careers of numerous Formula One drivers, giving the venue a lasting influence beyond the races themselves.

Magny-Cours combines technical low-speed corners with fast direction changes and several substantial braking zones, producing a lap that rewards precision more than continuous high-speed flow. The opening sequence through Grande Courbe and Estoril is particularly important, with the long Estoril right-hander determining acceleration onto the circuit’s principal straight.
Heavy braking for the Adelaide Hairpin provides the clearest overtaking opportunity before the circuit returns through faster changes of direction. Imola and Château d’Eau introduce contrasting demands in the later part of the lap, while the Lycée section requires accurate braking and traction before the short run towards the finish.
Although Magny-Cours contains several individually distinctive corners, its defining challenge comes from the contrast between them.
