History
The original Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps opened in 1921, utilising public roads through the Ardennes countryside to create an exceptionally fast triangular circuit measuring almost 15 kilometres.
During the 1930s, the famous Raidillon hill was constructed to improve the original route through Eau Rouge, creating what would become one of motorsport’s most iconic sequences.
For decades Spa represented the ultimate challenge. Cars raced through villages, forests and open countryside at astonishing speeds with virtually no margin for error. Following growing safety concerns during the late 1960s, Formula One temporarily left the circuit before a substantially shorter permanent configuration was introduced in 1979.
