Set on the western shore of Lake Como in Cernobbio, Villa Erba is a historic lakeside estate combining a nineteenth-century villa, extensive parkland and a modern exhibition and congress centre. This unusual combination allows the property to accommodate major cultural, commercial and private events while retaining the character of a historic Italian estate.

Within automotive culture, Villa Erba is particularly associated with the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este and other prestigious gatherings held around Lake Como. Its expansive grounds and exhibition facilities complement the more intimate setting of neighbouring Villa d’Este, making the two properties important partners within one of Europe’s most celebrated automotive events.

History

Villa Erba was created during the late nineteenth century for the Erba family, whose pharmaceutical and industrial success allowed the development of an imposing residence on the shore of Lake Como. The estate subsequently became associated with several generations of the family and the social life of the region.

Among its most celebrated residents was Italian film director Luchino Visconti, who spent significant periods of his youth at the estate. The villa and its surroundings later retained an important connection with his life and cultural legacy, adding another dimension to the historical identity of the property.

During the twentieth century, the estate evolved from a private residence towards its contemporary public and institutional role. The preservation of the historic villa alongside the development of a modern exhibition complex allowed Villa Erba to become an international event destination without abandoning the landscape and architecture from which its identity developed.

Architecture

The historic Villa Erba represents the elegance of late nineteenth-century Italian lakeside architecture, with ornate façades, richly decorated interiors and reception rooms overlooking Lake Como. Its architecture was conceived together with the surrounding landscape, allowing terraces, gardens and views across the water to form part of the experience of the residence.

The estate is surrounded by extensive historic parkland, where mature trees, open lawns and lakeside paths create a transition between the villa and the waterfront. This landscape provides an important outdoor setting for exhibitions and events while preserving the atmosphere of the original private estate.

Alongside the historic property stands the modern exhibition and congress centre, whose large flexible spaces provide the infrastructure required for conferences, exhibitions and vehicle presentations. The contrast between contemporary event facilities and the historic villa allows Villa Erba to accommodate substantial international gatherings within a distinctly Lake Como environment.

Visitor Experience

During major events, visitors experience Villa Erba as both an exhibition venue and a historic lakeside estate. Indoor displays can extend into the surrounding lawns and parkland, allowing exhibitions to move naturally between contemporary facilities, historic architecture and the landscape of Lake Como.

During the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, Villa Erba provides the more publicly accessible side of the wider event, giving enthusiasts opportunities to encounter automobiles and related displays beyond the intimate environment of neighbouring Villa d’Este. The proximity of the two estates allows them to function as complementary parts of the same automotive destination.

The experience extends naturally into Cernobbio and Lake Como, with the lakeside promenade, restaurants and ferry connections close to the estate. Visitors can therefore combine an event at Villa Erba with exploration of the historic communities, villas and landscapes surrounding the lake.

Location

Villa Erba occupies a prominent lakeside position in Cernobbio, approximately five kilometres north-west of Como and less than an hour’s drive from Milan.

Its position provides convenient access to the wider Lake Como region while remaining within reach of Milan, Lugano and the principal international airports of northern Italy and southern Switzerland.
