Nestled within the rolling hills of California’s scenic Carmel Valley, The Quail Golf Club is one of the most prestigious private golf destinations on the Monterey Peninsula. Surrounded by oak woodlands, vineyards and the Santa Lucia Mountains, the club combines understated luxury with a tranquil natural setting that stands in marked contrast to the dramatic Pacific coastline nearby.
Although renowned among golfers for its championship course and refined hospitality, The Quail Golf Club has become equally celebrated within the automotive world as the home of The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering. Every August, the fairways are transformed into an elegant open-air exhibition where some of the world’s finest automobiles, motorcycles and luxury manufacturers gather during Monterey Car Week.
In Brief
- Quail Golf Club is located in Carmel Valley on California’s Monterey Peninsula.

- Its landscaped golf-course setting creates a distinctive garden-party atmosphere for automotive exhibitions.
History
The Quail Golf Club opened in the late twentieth century as part of the Quail Lodge & Golf Club resort, quickly earning a reputation for combining championship golf with luxury accommodation and exceptional service.
Its association with the automotive world began in 2003 with the inaugural edition of The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering. Conceived as an intimate alternative to traditional concours events, the gathering sought to combine exceptional automobiles with fine cuisine, hospitality and the relaxed elegance of California wine country.
Over the following decades the event evolved into one of the defining highlights of Monterey Car Week, attracting collectors, manufacturers, designers and enthusiasts from around the globe while maintaining its carefully curated atmosphere.
Setting & Landscape
Quail Golf Club provides a fundamentally different environment from a conventional exhibition centre. Its landscaped fairways and setting within Carmel Valley allow automobiles to be displayed outdoors with substantial space around them, turning the surrounding landscape into part of the presentation rather than simply providing a location for the event.
This relationship between automobiles and landscape is particularly important to the character of The Quail. Vehicles are presented across the greens within an informal garden-party environment, accompanied by hospitality and social spaces rather than the stands and enclosed halls associated with traditional motor shows.
Quail Golf Club has become an important destination within international automotive culture as the home of The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, held during Monterey Car Week. The event brings rare historic automobiles, competition cars and significant contemporary vehicles onto the golf course in a distinctive garden-party setting.
The gathering has also developed into a stage for manufacturers, designers and specialist marques, with important production cars, concepts and limited-series models making public debuts there. This connection between collector automobiles and contemporary design allows The Quail to look simultaneously at automotive heritage and the continuing evolution of the performance automobile.
Its automotive identity extends beyond the principal August gathering through The Quail Rally and motorcycle-focused events including The Quail MotoFest. Together, these activities have transformed the golf club into a recurring meeting place for collectors, manufacturers and enthusiasts, giving it a distinctive position within the wider automotive culture of the Monterey Peninsula.
Visitor Experience
During most of the year, The Quail Golf Club operates as a private luxury golf destination offering championship golf, fine dining, accommodation and wellness facilities.
During Monterey Car Week, however, the atmosphere changes completely. Guests enjoy beautifully presented vehicle displays, gourmet food prepared by renowned chefs, premium hospitality and opportunities to meet designers, engineers, collectors and manufacturers in an unusually informal environment.
Unlike larger public automotive events, attendance is intentionally limited, allowing visitors to experience the exhibition at a leisurely pace while enjoying the surrounding landscape.
Location
The Quail Golf Club is situated in Carmel, approximately 15 kilometres south-east of Monterey.
Its central position places it within easy reach of many of Monterey Car Week’s most important venues, including WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, Pebble Beach Golf Links and the scenic coastal drives of the Monterey Peninsula.
