History
The Las Vegas Convention Center first opened in 1959 as Las Vegas rapidly established itself as one of America’s leading destinations for conventions and business tourism.
Over subsequent decades the complex expanded repeatedly, reflecting the city’s remarkable growth as an international exhibition destination. Successive developments culminated in the modern West Hall expansion, opened in 2021, which introduced state-of-the-art exhibition facilities and the innovative underground transport system developed by The Boring Company.
The venue’s automotive significance grew with the arrival of the SEMA Show, which evolved into the world’s largest trade exhibition dedicated to performance parts, custom vehicles and specialty equipment. Its partnership with AAPEX further strengthened Las Vegas as the annual meeting place of the global automotive aftermarket.
Architecture & Design
Las Vegas Convention Center is a vast exhibition campus that has expanded repeatedly as the city’s convention industry has grown. Its most substantial recent addition is the West Hall, opened in 2021 as part of a $1 billion expansion that added approximately 1.4 million square feet and introduced a more contemporary architectural identity to the complex.
That identity is particularly visible in the West Hall’s sweeping ribbon-like roof, a design language subsequently extended across the older campus during a $600 million renovation completed in 2026. The programme also introduced a glass-fronted Central Hall Grand Lobby, increased natural light, redesigned entrances and an enclosed concourse connecting major sections of the complex.
The enormous scale of the site has also produced an unusual approach to internal transportation. The Las Vegas Convention Center Loop uses underground tunnels and electric vehicles to move visitors between stations across the campus, reducing journeys that can otherwise require lengthy walks. Together with the continuing architectural redevelopment, it reflects a convention centre designed increasingly as a connected urban-scale campus rather than a collection of exhibition halls.
Las Vegas Convention Center occupies an important position within the global automotive aftermarket as the long-standing home of the SEMA Show. The exhibition moved to Las Vegas in 1977 and developed there into a major international meeting place for performance, customisation, specialist equipment and automotive engineering.
SEMA brings together vehicle manufacturers, component suppliers, tuners, fabricators and specialist businesses, with products ranging from performance and off-road equipment to wheels, tyres, electronics and vehicle restyling. New products and highly modified demonstration vehicles make the event an important showcase for trends that frequently emerge outside conventional automotive manufacturers.
