History
The origins of Fiera Milano date to 1920, when Milan established a permanent exhibition centre to support Italy’s rapidly expanding industrial economy. For much of the twentieth century, exhibitions were held at the historic Fiera Campionaria site near the city centre, helping Milan establish itself as one of Europe’s foremost commercial capitals.
As international exhibitions grew in both size and complexity, a new exhibition district was developed in nearby Rho. Opened in 2005, the modern Fiera Milano complex became one of the largest exhibition centres in Europe, allowing organisers to host significantly larger international events while maintaining close links to Milan’s business, financial and cultural institutions.
Today, the historic city-centre exhibition grounds continue to serve selected events through Allianz MiCo, while the Rho complex accommodates the largest international exhibitions.
Architecture
The present fieramilano complex at Rho was designed by Italian architect Massimiliano Fuksas and opened in 2005, replacing much of the exhibition capacity previously concentrated at Milan’s historic urban fairgrounds. Conceived on the scale of a small exhibition city, the complex organises large halls along a central pedestrian axis, allowing enormous individual events to operate while maintaining a clear route through the site.
Its defining architectural element is the long central glass-covered walkway, whose undulating canopy creates a recognisable spine connecting the exhibition halls and visitor facilities. Rather than treating circulation as a purely functional space between buildings, the design turns this axis into the architectural identity of the complex, with the changing geometry of the glass roof providing orientation across its considerable length.
The architecture is consequently driven by both scale and movement. Exhibition halls remain deliberately flexible and functional, while the central axis provides visual continuity and a shared public space between them. Direct connections with the Rho-Fieramilano metro and railway station reinforce this planning concept, allowing large visitor flows to enter the complex through public transport rather than depending exclusively on road access. The current fairground contains halls numbered across a large campus organised around this central circulation system.
